What is a Facelift?

While dermal fillers and energy-based devices can offer short term facial rejuvenation to smooth lines and combat volume loss, they are no match for sagging skin in the midface and jawline, which can compromise one’s image and distract from the beauty of the features. A surgical facelift addresses skin laxity in the lower face, correcting jowls, tightening the underlying muscles, and rewinding the clock by as much as a decade.

Facelift surgery can:

  • Elevate sagging cheeks
  • Reverse drooping jowls
  • Correct redundant skin folds
  • Tighten and tone the muscles
  • Amplify definition in the jawline
  • Reduce wrinkles and lines

Facelift Types

SMAS Facelift

The SMAS lift is an advanced technique that addresses the lower facial regions, targeting the superficial muscular aponeurotic system to provide significant support and long-lasting rejuvenation. By adjusting the deeper facial muscles, your surgeon can produce results that appear authentic and personalized. It is an excellent procedure for firming the jowls, improving definition in the jawline, and reversing sagging in the midface.

Deep Plane Facelift

A deep plane lift addresses the layer beneath the SMAS to remodel the facial the deeper attachments of the facial structure, shifting the tissue and muscles as a single unit rather than piecemeal. The surgeon is able to focus on gentle lifting rather than tightly pulling the skin, which leads to a dramatically more natural-looking and longer-lasting result. In some cases, the facial fat pads in the cheeks may be repositioned to further enhance a lifted aesthetic.

Mini Facelift

A mini facelift comes with shorter incisions and less downtime than its conventional counterpart and can be performed to elevate the cheeks, correct early jowling, and redefine the jawline. The procedure can be combined with dermal fillers or fat grafting to produce a revitalized, well-rested appearance. Many patients in their 40s who are not quite ready for a full facelift undergo a mini lift to address signs of aging when they first appear.

Non-Surgical Facelift

For those seeking temporary improvements with no downtime or discomfort, a non-surgical facelift can be performed using a combination of dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Sculptra. Fillers have the unique ability to restore volume sacrificed to the aging process, but they cannot address sagging layers of skin in the mid and lower face. For this concern, only a surgical facelift will achieve the desired results.

Candidacy

Ideal candidates for a facelift are struggling with a loss of skin elasticity, jowling, and a lax jawline.

They may have explored non-invasive options in the past but are now ready for a procedure that produces more significant changes. Patients undergoing cosmetic surgery should be in good mental and physical health, be non-smokers, and have realistic, positive attitudes towards their outcomes.

How is the Facelift Procedure Performed?

Anesthesia

Facelift surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. Patients remain asleep and feel no pain. A responsible adult, friend, or family member will be required to drive the patient home after surgery.

Incisions

Your surgeon will create incisions according to your unique treatment plan and the type of approach chosen (SMAS, deep plane, mini lift, etc.) Incisions are typically well-hidden in the hairline, within the folds behind the ears, under the chin, or even on the inside of the mouth.

Procedure

Through the incisions, your surgeon will remove excess sagging tissue along with small pockets of stubborn fat. The facial muscles will be firmed and a natural aesthetic will be upheld at all times.

Sutures

As a final step, your incisions will be closed with fine sutures, either dissolvable or removable. Skin glue may also be used as required. The patient is then placed in the recovery suite for careful monitoring until it is safe to release them.

We will instruct you on best practices for wound care, sleeping, bathing, resuming your workouts, and eventually returning to work or school. Our team will remain on hand to answer any questions that arise and to ensure a fluid and stress-free recovery.
